Question of the Week: Paperbacks differing from hardcovers?

Question: What do you think about the publisher's choice to sometimes change a hardcover's cover when it comes out in paperback?

 

My Answer: It doesn't really bother me because I buy all of my books in paperback anyway. It kind of annoys me when the hardcover is prettier though. But I always get different covers anyway because I am Aussie and I buy mostly UK which is generally the same as here anyway.

Question of the Week: Love Triangles in books?

Question: What do you think about love triangles in books?

My Answer: I'm ok with them, as long as the triangle isn't completely obvious e.g. Twilight. Everyone knew she was going to end up with Edward, to the point that Jacob wasn't really needed as a love interest at all. If you can't be completely certain as to who is going to win I find it fun to win and at least be able to go for someone.

Question of the Week: Weird character names, do they bother you?

Question: What is your opinion on weird character names? (i.e. Renesmee, Katniss, Po, etc.). Love them or loathe them?

Answer: They don't bother me, especially when they fit the story. If everyone else has a normal name and then you come out with something weird just for the sake of it (Renesmee anyone?) that kind of annoys me but really, it's not like you've known these people their whole lives and all of sudden they come out with this weird name...it's the only thing you've ever known them as.

Question of the Week: How do you feel when you're called a nerd for reading?

Question: When you are called a nerd for loving books, how do you feel?

 

Answer: I used to feel embarrased, but now I just feel annoyed, and sorry for the people who think its ok to make fun of people's hobbies. You don't see me making fun of your 8 hour a day Call of Duty addiction. I more feel upset at the lack of respect rather than being put down for reading.

I have been made fun of for reading for most of my life so now I'm used to it (sad aye?) but I still feel sorry for people who think that reading is something to be made fun of, I;m not saying you have to love it, I'm just saying...each to their own.

Question of the Week: What are your other hobbies?

Question: Other than reading what are some 'hobbies' you love?

Answer: Crocheting! I absolutely love Crocheting (basically knitting with one stick) I can only make blankets but especially in winter it's so much fun!

As most of you know I also love writing!

Question of the Week: When do you like a book?

Question: At what point do you decide if you like a book or not? If it's not your cup of tea, do you stop reading or fight through it until the end?

Answer: I know this sounds like a cop out but it really depends on the book. If it's epic - say a four to five star book - I should be able to tell within the first chapter. But most books I can tell within the first one hundred pages.

There are a couple of rare occurences in which I will hate a book for about half of it and then suddenly love it. I know that has happened once...but I can't remember what with...same goes for the other way around.

Most books I will will fight it out until the end. There have only been a couple that I have given up on when they took more than a month to read.

Question of the Week: What do you look for in a book?

Question: What are the key components you look for in a book?

My Answer: Hmmm, this one made me really think this week. I suppose it would have to come down to a good cover one that catches my eye and draws me in, if the cover is only okay, it will depend on a good blurb. If a book has neither of those things, well I won't pick it up.

A paranormal aspect will always help the case but it's not a gurantee anymore. Anything with the name Frost or Hobb on it is a definite...

Question: How influential are reviews when selecting a book to read?(Thanks to Brain Candy Book Reviews for the question idea!)

My Answer: Usually I find new books to read through reviewers. It usually only takes one positive review for my attention to be brought to a book. Then if the cover appeals to me...I will most likely buy it. If however the cover doesn't appeal to me...well...I probably won't.

We know how judgemental I am of book covers darlings....

Weekly Question: Do you need quiet when you read?

Question: When you're reading do you need a quiet environment to focus or can you read through a natural disaster?

My Answer:

It really depends. I can read through a natural disaster, living with my family sometimes you have to, and I read at work as well. But I don't like to. I can block out all the noise and continue being absorbed in a story, hell, people have been trying to talk to me and they thought I was ignoring them...I actually didn't hear them (it was a really good book) but I don't like to read in a noisy environment. Even though that's where most of my reading gets done.

I used to be able to read with music on as well and I liked it. Until, one day during my Guy Sebastian phase I was reading an awesome book. I can't remember the name, I can't remember the author, but I can remember the story and the setting and something about a painting and a dead girl. Every single time I listen to the Guy Sebastian songs I was obsessed with at the time I think of that book and it frustrates me because I can't remember what it was.

So because music started attaching itself to my books, I stopped listening other wise my favourite song which makes me happy, would start making me sad, lonely, excited, angry, on edge and every other emotion that I feel when reading books.

So in short, I can read with the TV on whilst playing the computer, listening to music and telling my brothers to stop fighting (seriously, I can, no sarcasm in that statement) but I don't like to, because I feel that each book deserves my full attention.

Reading or Writing?

This post is inspired by Eleni at La Femme Reader's weekly question. This week the question is: Which do you prefer, reading or writing?

Now, this answer is actually pretty hard for me, because I am a writer...but I am also extremely lazy. If someone has already done it for me, well then...why not take advantage of that instead of creating my own story. Yet the stories in my head, on my paper, end the way I want. The girl gets the cute funny guy instead of the dark brooding hot guy.

Or instead of sparkling glitter pixies I can create really horrific, evil, bloodsucking, mind invading smoke elves (or something like that).

Point is, am I happy for someone else to tell the story? Or will my inner control freak constantly deign to have the perfect ending that only I can create exactly how I want it.

So my laziness says: Reading
And my control freak says: Writing

I am going to go with writing.

Question of the Week: Do you Judge a book by it's cover?

The "Monday's Question of the Day" is a weekly meme done by Eleni at La Femme Readers. On Monday she asked:

Question: Do you judge a book by its cover? If so, was there a time where you read an amazing book that didn't have an appealing cover?

My Answer: Yes!!! All the time! I don't read a book unless it has a nice cover, that is how I buy them. The weird thing about it is, even book that have been recommended to me as being awesome and completely up my alley, some I hated the covers, and although I didn't prejudge I ended up hating or at least really disliking some of the books. If I can't connect with the cover I know I won't like the book.

 The cover doesn't even have to be visually loud or even appealing. Look at Vampire Academy, to be perfectly honest, I think the covers are a bit dark and nothing overly special BUT when I first saw them I had to have them, something about them just spoke to me and I couldn't resist buying the first three books in the series. The cover doesn't have to be breathtakingly beautiful, I just need to connect with it on some level.

 Then you have Twenties Girl, the back blurb wasn't overly appealing to me, but it was something about the cover, for four weeks I walked into the same shop to see that book staring me in the face and on the last day of my trip I bought it, and loved it.

Iron King is an example of a beautiful cover, but one that I couldn't connect with. Everything about this cover should draw me in like an insect to light. It is absolutely gorgeous, but even now as I look at it, after having read it...meh. It just doesn't do anything for me.

Beautiful Creatures is a good example of a recommendation gone wrong. Everyone says to read it that it is fantastic. Whole websites have been dedicated to it! Even when I bought it, I didn't really know why. The cover does nothing for me, neither did the book.

So there is my answer to the question of the covers. What's yours?
