I recommend Willow by Julia Hoban because it is a real, haunting, emotional book and while it can be disturbing at times, it is beautiful and I loved it. (I would be less vague but I can't without giving away the entire story--just trust me)
I recommend Woman in White by Wilkie Collins.
Most people see Victorian England through Dickens eyes which can be a bit depressing.
Woman in White, claimed to be the first detective mystery, has slightly gothic in flavour. It has the supernatural and sin, murder and mystery and also a surprising Mafia involvement. Excellent!
